In VA where I live, you can't metal detect in the state forests. As far as I know, we the people own them, but that's the law. With permission, you can on private property. If you do metal detect on private property (which is literally everywhere except sidewalks, roads, and government property) you can be charged with trespassing and would have to give back anything taken from their property...A good friend of mine metal detects all the time and this is how it has to be done if you want to do it legally...
