What kinds of things do you hope to find? I would expect other places in the world that have seen more major wars would have more randomly discarded metal that isn’t just trash.
Anyway try looking on some detecting forums :
etc etc etc (wow there were a lot of them)
I would try looking for old civil war battlefields they are often not protected. Do some research at your local library to find unknown details about battles or even just training camps around your area or further south. Find some history on any WW2 training that happened around your location. I know out in WV there is a place the military trained called the Dolly Sods where people have reported unexploded mortar munitions when hiking. Not sure if you would want to find one of those though. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolly_Sods_Wilderness)
