You need to check out:

whiteselectronics.com

Whites has a DVD & Video that is fantastic on "How To" Metal Detect. They are an industry leader and their product line is the best. I have 2 myself and they are a blast to use. They also have listings for Metal Detecting Groups and Organizations all over the U.S. listed state by state. You can buy metal detectors with waterproof sensor coils that are designed to be used under water in both fresh and salt water. I live in Maryland and I have been metal detecting for over 11 years now., in Maryland,Pennsylvania,Virginia, and North Carolina. Getting permission to detect on private property is as easy as asking the landowner. I can honestly say I have never been denied access by anyone yet. You do no damage so there isn't anything to be concerned about. I have found expensive gold and diamond rings/ jewelry,Civil War artifacts, bullets,a Union cannon ball, belt buckles, canteens, rare coins, tools and old hand made farming impliments. I have easy tripled what I have paid for my detectors and made a pretty good profit from selling what I have found.
